Quick Answer

  • Sentinel Multi-Tools are only available at Harmonic Camps on Corrupted (Dissonant) Planets: you cannot buy them from standard shops.
  • To reach a Harmonic Camp, you need an Echo Locator, which drops from Dissonant Resonators or Corrupted Sentinels on those planets.
  • At the camp, you solve a short math-and-glyph puzzle at the Harmonic Interface terminal to unlock the tool chest.
  • The multi-tool arrives in poor condition. Many slots are damaged and must be repaired before it performs well.
  • Sentinel Multi-Tools offer one of the highest damage bonuses of any multi-tool type, making them a top pick for combat.
  • Each camp visit also reveals the coordinates of a crashed Sentinel Interceptor ship: a great two-for-one reward.
  • Your first camp visit awards the Aeron Turbojet jetpack customization as a bonus.
  • You can run multiple Harmonic Camps to hunt for a better class or variant before committing.

Overview

Introduced with the Interceptor update, the Sentinel Multi-Tool is unlike anything sold in a space station shop. It's reverse-engineered Sentinel hardware, a salvaged Hardframe weapon converted into a functioning multi-tool, and it shows. The body has a mechanical, internal-components-exposed aesthetic with fixed colors and model variants. You won't find one on the market; these are claimed, not purchased.

What makes the effort worthwhile is raw combat performance. Sentinel Multi-Tools carry a high damage bonus (comparable to or exceeding Alien tools at the S-class tier) alongside a medium mining bonus and a medium scanner bonus. If you're leaning into Sentinel combat, Corrupted Planets, or simply want an aggressive, unconventional loadout, this is the tool to chase.

The flip side is that every Sentinel Multi-Tool you claim will be heavily damaged. Repairing it costs Nanites and resources sourced from the corrupted planet itself, so plan to spend some time on-world after the pickup.

For a broader breakdown of how Sentinel tools stack up against Alien, Royal, and Atlantid types, see the No Man's Sky Multi-Tool Types & Classes Explained guide.

Step 1: Find a Dissonant System and a Corrupted Planet

Open the Galaxy Map and look for star systems tagged as Dissonant. This label appears in the system info text in the galaxy map view. Installing a Conflict Scanner in your ship, a cheap upgrade available from most space station technology merchants, helps you filter and evaluate systems more efficiently, though you can spot the "Dissonant" label without one.

Once you warp into a Dissonant system, scan the planets from space. You're looking for one whose description includes "Corrupted Sentinels" or "Dissonance detected." These worlds have a distinctive purple haze and clusters of glowing purple crystals scattered across the surface. Corrupted Sentinels patrol the landscape, but they won't attack on sight unless you mine nearby resources or strike them first.

Tip: You can also reach a corrupted planet through an alternative route — defeat enough Sentinels anywhere to trigger a Sentinel Dreadnought encounter, then destroy the Dreadnought to receive a Dreadnought AI Fragment, which can direct you to a Dissonant system.

Step 2: Get an Echo Locator

An Echo Locator is a one-use item that pinpoints the nearest Harmonic Camp. There are two reliable ways to get one on a Corrupted Planet:

Source Method
Dissonant Resonators Scan and destroy these purple crystalline structures — the fastest method
Corrupted Sentinels Defeat them in combat; Echo Locators drop occasionally

The Dissonant Resonator route is recommended. Pull up your Scanner, tag a resonator, destroy it, and the Echo Locator should appear in your inventory. Note that the item is planet-bound. Activate it on the same planet where you found it. If you get a "Locational Interference" warning after activation, move to a different Dissonant system and try again.

Step 3: Locate and Reach the Harmonic Camp

After activating the Echo Locator, a Harmonic Signal marker appears on your HUD showing the direction and distance to the nearest Harmonic Camp. Follow the marker: the camp is a small, abandoned installation built around a large crashed pod, and it looks distinctly out of place among the corrupted terrain.

When you arrive, you'll see:

  • A yellow-screened Harmonic Interface terminal (the puzzle station) in front of the main pod
  • Two reinforced tents on either side of the pod. The left tent contains a cabinet with the Sentinel Multi-Tool; the right tent contains the remains of an Autophage robot
  • Several wheelbarrows containing Harmonic Scrap, which reward various items including exosuit and multi-tool expansion slots when looted

Pick up the Harmonic Scrap around the camp before interacting with the terminal. These are freebies worth grabbing.

Step 4: Solve the Harmonic Interface Puzzle

This is the gating mechanic, and it's simpler than it looks. Interact with the yellow Harmonic Interface terminal and follow these steps:

Phase 1 — Scan Memory Registers

Select "Scan memory registers." The terminal displays three lines of alphanumeric text, each ending in a short math equation (addition or subtraction). Solve each equation. The answers will always be numbers between 1 and 16.

Example output (your numbers will differ. They're randomized per camp):

REGISTER 0xASDFJ3AS == 6 - 2    → Answer: 4
REGISTER 0x12SDF324 == 15 - 5   → Answer: 10
REGISTER 0xGLW12344 == 19 - 10  → Answer: 9

Write down or remember all three answers in order.

Phase 2 — Input Override Glyphs

Select "Access main interface" then "Input override glyphs." You'll see three glyph slots to fill. Each of the 16 portal glyphs in No Man's Sky corresponds to a number from 1 to 16. Select the glyph matching each of your three answers.

If you enter the correct glyphs, the lockdown lifts and you'll be able to access the multi-tool cabinet. Confirm the interaction, then open the nearby tool chest in the left tent to claim your Sentinel Multi-Tool.

Bonus: After solving the puzzle, you can also select "Locate Dissonance Spikes" from the terminal to receive coordinates to a crashed Sentinel Interceptor ship nearby — well worth taking. See the No Man's Sky Sentinel Interceptor Guide for what to do with it. On your very first Harmonic Camp visit, you'll also receive the Aeron Turbojet jetpack customization as a one-time reward.

Step 5: Repair and Upgrade Your New Tool

Your freshly claimed Sentinel Multi-Tool will have most of its slots damaged. Before it's useful, you'll need to repair them. The materials required (things like Chromatic Metal, Ferrite Dust, and Condensed Carbon) are found right there on the Corrupted Planet, so gather liberally before leaving.

Repairing every slot also costs Nanites. If your Nanite reserves are low, check out the No Man's Sky: How to Get Nanites Fast guide before committing to a full repair job.

Once repaired, head to the Multi-Tool Upgrade Station on any space station to raise the class from C or B toward S. Upgrading the class first unlocks the tool's full slot potential, up to 60 total slots at S-class.

Forbidden Multi-Tool Modules

Sentinel Multi-Tools can accept Forbidden Multi-Tool Modules, which are procedurally generated upgrades obtained by opening Sentinel Weapons Shards (dropped by Corrupted Sentinels). These modules add bonuses to weapons like the Boltcaster, including damage, fire rate, and reload time improvements.

You can install up to three Forbidden Multi-Tool Modules of the same type. Installing a fourth of the same type disables all modules of that type, so stop at three per category.

Hunting for a Better Class

Since Harmonic Camps are free to revisit and each corrupted planet can have multiple camps, you can effectively reroll for a better class by working through different camps.

Class Damage Bonus Range
C Low
B Moderate
A Good
S Up to ~50% (highest in the game)

S-class Sentinel Multi-Tools can reach damage bonuses that exceed even Alien-type tools at the same class, making patient hunters well rewarded. Use multiple Echo Locators from the same planet session to hit several camps quickly.

For the full strategy on class-hunting and Nanite-efficient upgrading across all multi-tool types, the No Man's Sky Multi-Tool Guide hub covers every method in depth.

FAQ

Do I need to complete the main story before hunting a Sentinel Multi-Tool?

No. You can travel to a Dissonant system at any point in the game as long as your ship has enough warp range. That said, newer players will find the Corrupted Sentinels tough to fight, so it helps to have a reasonably upgraded weapon and hazard protection. Review the No Man's Sky Survival Guide if your suit protection is lacking.

Can I buy a Sentinel Multi-Tool from a vendor?

No. Sentinel Multi-Tools cannot be purchased from space stations or NPC vendors. They are exclusively obtained from Harmonic Camps on Corrupted Planets. There is no shortcut to the acquisition process.

What happens if I fail the glyph puzzle?

Nothing catastrophic. The interface simply rejects your input and you can try again. There is no penalty for incorrect glyph entries, so take your time working through the math equations before committing to your selections.

Is the Sentinel Multi-Tool actually the best in the game?

It has the highest raw damage ceiling of any standard multi-tool type at S-class, which makes it excellent for combat builds. However, "best" depends on your playstyle. Alien Multi-Tools and Atlantid Staves can match or exceed it in certain builds once Forbidden Modules and upgrade layouts are optimized. If combat is your priority, the Sentinel is an excellent choice.

How many Harmonic Camps can I visit in one session?

As many as you have Echo Locators for. Each Echo Locator is one-time-use, but you can gather multiple from Dissonant Resonators during a single planet visit. Each camp you unlock also provides different loot and potentially a different class of Sentinel Multi-Tool, so farming camps is a legitimate strategy.

Can I upgrade a Sentinel Multi-Tool the same way as a normal multi-tool?

Yes. The class upgrade station on space stations works the same for Sentinel tools. Upgrade to S-class using Nanites, repair all damaged slots with on-planet resources, then install up to three Forbidden Multi-Tool Modules alongside standard upgrade tech. The process is identical to any other multi-tool. It just starts in worse condition.
