Growing a Living Ship takes the better part of a week of real time and 3,200 Quicksilver for the Void Egg. Once it hatches, a lot of players park it and go back to their old fighter, because the usual upgrade habits stop working. You open the technology tab, try to install a stack of S-class Pulse Engine modules, and the game refuses.

That refusal is intentional. A Living Ship is a separate equipment ecosystem, not a reskinned starship. It has organs rather than components, and those organs have their own upgrade items with their own acquisition routes. Nothing carries over from the conventional side of the game except the general principles of slot layout.

Living Ships Use Their Own Technology Tree

A conventional starship has an installed technology section and an upgrade module section. You buy modules, install three per technology for the adjacency stack, and chase S-class rolls. That entire workflow is unavailable on a Living Ship.

Instead, a Living Ship arrives with a fixed set of organic systems already grafted in. They cover launch, pulse travel, warp travel, defence, and weapons, but they are separate items with separate names, and the game treats them as incompatible with anything from the standard catalogue.

Two practical consequences:

  1. Your module stockpile does not transfer. Storage Augmentations, Hyperdrive upgrades, Photon Cannon upgrades, Shield upgrades and the rest simply cannot be placed. Keep them for your other ships.
  2. You cannot buy your way to a finished build. There is no Technology Merchant selling organic upgrades on the space station. Acquisition runs through the questline and through Living Ship specific sources.

Where the Organic Technology Comes From

The Starbirth questline is both how you get the ship and how you get most of its starting technology. Each stage of the chain grows or grants an organ, and those organs are what the finished ship flies with. There is no separate shopping trip afterwards.

Beyond the questline, further organic technology and slot expansion come from Living Ship specific sources rather than from any normal vendor. Organic Frigate fleet expeditions are the main repeatable route, and Living Ship space encounters occasionally produce items as well. These are slow, low-volume sources by design.

If your metric is having something nobody else in the lobby is flying, and enjoying the questline that produced it, the Living Ship earns its hangar space. It is also perfectly capable for general play. Exploring, trading, warping, and light combat are all fine. The gap only opens up in serious combat and in min-max scenarios.

The common pattern among long-term players is to keep both. Fly the Living Ship for exploration and screenshots, keep a conventional S-class for combat runs and hauling, and switch as needed.
