Overview

Purple systems are the last locked door in the star colour progression, and the only one gated by story rather than by mining. Copper buys you nothing, Cadmium buys red, Emeril buys green, Indium buys blue, and then the pattern stops. There is no sixth metal to grind. Instead the game asks whether you have finished the Atlas Path and met the Autophage, and only then hands over a blueprint through a conversation on the Space Anomaly.

What sits on the other side is real content rather than a recoloured skybox. Two planet archetypes exist nowhere else, terrain generation is noticeably wilder, and the local stellar metal refines at the best rate in the game.

Worlds Part II arrived on 29 January 2025 as update 5.50, and purple stars were its headline addition. On the galaxy map they read as class X or Y in the second field of the system description, which is the most reliable way to spot one since the star colour itself can be hard to judge against the background. Access works the same way as the rest of the chain in the hyperdrive upgrades and warp guide: the Atlantid Drive is cumulative, covering yellow through purple on its own.

Set expectations on one point early. Purple systems do not appear on the galaxy map at all until In Stellar Multitudes is complete. Players who obtain the drive some other way and then go hunting for purple dots find nothing and assume it is broken. The map reveal is tied to the mission, not the technology.

The Prerequisite Chain

There is no shortcut here. Each entry below has to be finished before the next becomes available.

Steps 2 and 3 are the named prerequisites. Step 1 is listed because They Who Returned cannot begin until The Purge is done, so it is required in practice even though it is not itself a stated gate. If New Beginnings is sitting in your log, The Purge is behind you.

A common stall point: players finish both named prerequisites, then wait at a station for a prompt that never arrives. The trigger is environmental. Undock, fly out, and hold the pulse drive between planets until the transmission cuts in.

In Stellar Multitudes, Step by Step

The questline runs long and carries a lot of dialogue. The mechanical beats are these.

Trigger. Engage the pulse drive in open space. The mission begins on its own once the prerequisites are met.
Find a dissonant world. You are directed into a system containing one, then told to land.
Scan for Echo Seeds. Use the Analysis Visor in Target Sweep mode. These come from a specific variant of the violet crystal formations, not the ordinary Atlantideum ones.
Talk to the Assembled Construct. After the Divergence Fragment departs, you are sent to the Space Anomaly, where the Construct hands over the blueprint.
Build the drive. The mission will not advance until it is installed in your ship.
Restore a system. Lock in three choices and the Atlas propagates them into a purple system recovered from deletion. Open the galaxy map and warp to it.

That final step is the part most write-ups skip. You are not handed a purple system, you specify what is in it:

Payload alpha sets the dominant lifeform: Gek, Vy'keen, Korvax, or uncharted.
Payload beta sets the primary planet: gas giant, water world, or paradise planet.
Payload gamma sets a secondary planet trait: extreme weather, nest of horrors, or overrun by Sentinels.

Pick with intent. If you want a permanent Quartzite and Crystallised Helium base site, take the gas giant. If you want a farming system rather than a fight, avoid the Sentinel option.

Building the Atlantid Drive

Living Glass is the only fiddly component, and only because its blueprint is easy to have missed. It comes from Manufacturing Facilities and Operations Centres, from the Synthesis Laboratory on the Anomaly, or from the Scientist questline once you have built a Science Terminal. The Atlantid Drive is a starship technology rather than an upgrade module, so it does not count against the three-module hyperdrive limit, and it carries no charge bar. Slot it against the Hyperdrive so it joins the adjacency network. Do not waste a supercharged slot on it: the drive feeds adjacency but has no range stat of its own to amplify.

Farming the 200 Atlantideum

This is the real cost of the drive, and it is all spent on dissonant planets. Mining the violet crystal formations is the steady method. Killing corrupted Sentinel drones and quadrupeds is faster if your build can handle sustained waves, with roughly a two in three chance of a drop per kill. Harmonic Camp containers also hold it at a much lower rate. Gas giants and water worlds are the genuine draw. Both are new archetypes rather than reskins, and neither generates under any other star colour, worth knowing if you are working through the planet types and biomes guide and wondering why two entries never turn up.

Quartzite is where purple systems pay for themselves. It is the fifth stellar metal, but it breaks the pattern of the earlier four: Cadmium, Emeril, and Indium each exist partly to build the next drive in the chain, whereas Quartzite builds nothing, because there is no drive beyond Atlantid. It simply refines into Chromatic Metal better than anything below it. Activated Quartzite is made deliberately from Quartzite, Crystallised Helium, and Methane, all three available inside a single purple system with a gas giant in it.

Ships are the open question. No purple-exclusive starship class turned up in any source consulted, and exotic spawn behaviour appears unchanged. Treat purple space as a planet and resource destination rather than a ship hunting ground.

Finding Them Afterwards

Purple stars populate the map normally once the questline closes out, but they are rare and easy to miss. Read the second field of the system description, where purple systems begin with X or Y. Failing that, set your Catalogue target to Quartzite to steer the map toward systems holding it, or Lithium to narrow toward the water worlds.

What Purple Systems Are Not

Atlantid multi-tools do not come from purple systems. They come from discordant interfaces on monoliths in Korvax systems and require Autophage progress, not the drive. Shared naming is the only connection, and the Atlantid multi-tool and staff guide has the real method.

Atlantideum is not a purple system resource. It is farmed on dissonant worlds anywhere in the galaxy, and you need it before you reach purple space, not after.

The drive is not a range upgrade. It changes which stars you can select, nothing else. Jump distance still comes from your Hyperdrive, your modules, and your ship class.

FAQ

Can I get the Atlantid Drive without doing the story?

No. The blueprint only comes from In Stellar Multitudes, and that mission checks for They Who Returned and The Atlas Path before it will trigger. There is no merchant, no salvage source, and no crafting path around it.

The mission will not start. What am I missing?

Usually one of two things. Either a prerequisite is incomplete, or the trigger has not had a chance to fire. It activates while pulsing in open space, never at a station or on a planet. Check your log, then fly a few pulse hops between planets and wait.

Why can I not see any purple stars even with the drive installed?

Because the map reveal is tied to completing In Stellar Multitudes rather than to owning the technology. If you acquired the drive some other way, such as through an expedition, the systems stay hidden until the mission is done on that save.

Does warping to a purple system cost more fuel?

Not as far as could be verified. Purple jumps consume Warp Cells at the normal rate, and the Atlantid Drive has no charge requirement or consumable of its own once installed.

Is Quartzite better than Indium?

For Chromatic Metal it is the better raw input, particularly once activated. For straight selling, Activated Indium remains a strong and far more accessible earner that does not require finishing the Atlas Path. Keep the Indium operation running and treat Quartzite as a bonus rather than a replacement.
