Reputation in No Man's Sky is quiet. There is no dramatic faction war that locks you out of half the galaxy, and nothing you do with one race meaningfully punishes you with another. What standing does instead is slowly change the texture of your interactions: the tone of NPC dialogue, the quality of what they offer you, and the rewards their representatives will hand over.

Because the system is gentle, plenty of players ignore it for a hundred hours and then wonder why an NPC just gave someone else a better result from the same terminal. The Three Races and Their Character

The Gek

The Gek are a mercantile, commerce-focused species. Their systems lean toward trade, and Gek NPCs are the ones most likely to make deals, haggle, and reward you for showing an interest in their business. The Korvax

The Korvax are machine-based scientists devoted to knowledge, technology and the study of the universe. Their systems skew toward research and technology, and their interactions frequently involve curiosity, data, and unusual technical requests. They are the natural fit for players who care about scanning, discovery, technology upgrades and the deeper lore threads that run through the Atlas Path story.

The Vy'keen

The Vy'keen are a warrior culture organised around honour, combat and strength. Vy'keen NPCs respond to displays of martial competence, and their systems tilt toward weapons and combat technology. If you fight pirates, hunt sentinels, or run combat missions, Vy'keen standing rises almost as a side effect.

How Standing Rises

Standing is earned, not bought, and the sources are consistent across all three races.

Mission board work. Every space station has a mission board offering repeatable jobs for the system's dominant race. Completing them is the most reliable and repeatable way to raise standing, and it pays units and materials at the same time. Work the boards in systems belonging to the race you want to favour.

Dialogue choices. Many NPC encounters, at station terminals, in planetside buildings, and at crashed structures, present a set of responses. Choosing the response that fits the species' values raises standing; choosing badly can lower it or waste the encounter. This is where language matters enormously: without vocabulary, the options are rendered as untranslated words and you are guessing. The rewards are cumulative and mostly practical rather than flashy.

Better treatment in interactions. Higher standing shifts the tone and the outcomes of NPC encounters with that race, including the results you get from station terminals and planetside NPCs.
Improved trading outcomes. Being in good standing with a race generally makes their traders more agreeable to deal with, which compounds if you are running a buy-low sell-high loop across their systems.

The Guilds

The Merchants Guild is oriented around trade, cargo and commerce, and pairs naturally with a trading route or a stack of unit-farming methods.

Guild standing is raised chiefly by completing missions in that guild's domain, including the relevant mission board jobs, and by dealing with the envoy directly. Outlaws

Outlaw systems sit outside normal galactic authority. They have no standard station security, they trade in contraband, and they run their own pirate-aligned standing separate from the three races and the guilds.

Raising outlaw standing means doing outlaw work: smuggling, moving contraband, and taking the jobs offered inside those systems. The trade-off is real, since illegal cargo attracts attention in lawful systems, so committed smugglers usually build a route that keeps them mostly inside outlaw space.

Which Track to Prioritise

Pick the one your existing loop already feeds.

If you play as a trader, lead with the Gek and the Merchants Guild. Your normal route through commercial systems generates standing without a detour, and better merchant relations improve the margins you were chasing anyway.

If you play as an explorer or scientist, lead with the Korvax and the Explorers Guild. Scanning, cataloguing and long-range travel already satisfy most of what those tracks reward, and Korvax systems keep you near technology.

If you play as a fighter, lead with the Vy'keen and the Mercenaries Guild. Pirate defence, bounty hunting and sentinel fights all push both tracks at once.

If you play as an outlaw, the pirate track is its own project. Treat lawful standing as maintenance and accept that a contraband hold complicates life in policed systems.

Does raising standing with one race lower it with another?

No. The three race tracks are independent, so time spent in Gek space does not cost you anything with the Korvax or Vy'keen. You can max all three on the same save; it simply takes longer.

Do I need the language before I start on standing?

You do not strictly need it, but you should get it early. Mission board work raises standing regardless of vocabulary, while dialogue-based gains depend entirely on understanding the options. Without words, a large chunk of the system is closed to you.
